Naked Elf
Though Naked Elf consists of the members of Solution Science Systems, they are indeed a different band. While both bands have sounds firmly rooted in 70s progressive rock, SolSci music is highly precise, tightly composed and meticulously arranged. Naked Elf music, on the other hand, is completely improvised.
The point of Naked Elf is not the arrival at a destination but the experience of the trip itself. Guitarist Rob MacGrogran, drummer Kelly Shane and bassist/keyboard player Andy Tegethoff's aim is the development of a group synergy. When the band begins a piece, the members have no ideas as to what it will sound like or how it will develop-- they don't even known what key or time signature it will be in. Instead, they trust in the group and in their own sensitivity to the music, as well as to the other players, to tell them where to go. The results often sound startlingly like written pieces. With the release of their debut disc Yi, Naked Elf defines their sound yet never succumbs to any definition. Progressive rock, psychedelia, krautrock, free jazz and acid rock influence are apparent. The band moves between aggressive rock and dreamy ambience, groove and groon. The band has been playing together since 1999. The group has begun preparation for a second CD to be released in 2003. |
