Enemy From Space
Enemy From Space is the sobriquet taken up by Kelly Shane for his electronic music works. The EFS project began in 1995 when Shane purchased an 8-track recorder and started to create what he called "lo-fi sci-fi electronic music". A handful of these early recordings were released on a 7" EP on his own Ubik Records label in early 1996, and a slice of Yuletide insanity was included on the Ubik Christmas 7" in 1995. Enemy From Space also recorded a soundtrack for a student film during this period. Soon after, Shane began to write off-kilter pop and rock songs under the Enemy From Space name and gave tapes of them to friends. Three of these ditties landed on a split 7" with Canard in 1997 and led to the forming of the Newsboy Legion. The Legion become the main outlet for his rock leanings (for the time being), and from then on the EFS appellation was only used for electronic sounds, though Shane also used the name as producer of the New Albanian Riots. In 2002, Imperial Fuzz Records released Abstractions, the first full-length CD by Enemy From Space. The record consists of ambient and, yes, abstract music, sounds that float through the ether, yet have oddly catchy pop underpinnings within the gauzy spaces. Dreamy and melancholic, Abstractions feeds your head. The Condition of Music CD was released on Smiley Jones in 2003. In part, it is a furthering of the sounds on Abstractions, but it features a clearer, more sophisticated sound, as well as a more overt development of the subversive pop element in the EFS' spacey sound. Avant garde experimentation never tasted so sweet. Another CD, Plastic Orpheus, which was recorded concurrently with Condition, is due out in late 2003. Similar in sound, the album is a conceptual soundtrack and emphasizes the moodier melancholy of Shane's writing, as well as his predilection for psychedelic noise. EFS is currently working on a new CD to be released later next year on Smiley Jones. He is also collaborating with Atlanta's Robotic Storm Cloud on dual (or maybe duel) recordings. |
